Other causes include straining due to childbirth or the result of an inflammatory bowel disease, such as Crohn’s disease.

Typically, anal fissures will heal on their own. However, there are anal fissure treatments available, such as stool softeners and topical creams, to help alleviate any pain or discomfort during those four to six weeks.

In cases where your anal fissures persist past eight weeks, this is classified as a chronic condition. If the anal fissure does not improve on its own or with the above prescriptions, surgery may be a necessary step.
